3 ways to thrive in challenging times

Life is challenging at the moment. We are worried about catching Covid-19 and passing it on to others who are vulnerable and it’s increasingly hard to adapt to the changing rules, circumstances and priorities. There seems no end in sight. We can feel very confused by the mixed messages we are hearing in the media and be experiencing ‘cognitive dissonance.’

This is where we hold some contradictory beliefs, values or ideas from the information we are hearing. It is stressful trying to make sense of it all!

Fear and anxiety are known to suppress our immune systems and will keep us in ‘survival mode.’ This is not a healthy place to stay in. William Bridges in his book Managing Transitions says “ it isn’t the changes that do us in it’s the transitions.” His definition of transition is that it is the psychological process we go through in order to come to terms with a new situation.

We may have experienced transitions in mid-life already e.g. when a job or relationship comes to an end. A transition is like the place of ‘in between’ when we are in mid-air with nothing to hold onto. Covid-19 and what it has brought us individually and collectively has meant changes globally and locally which are trying to adjust and adapt to.

When a large part of your life feel out of control, it’s useful to stand back for a moment and ask yourself: –

  • What is in my control and what is outside of it?
  • What changes or adjustments can I make?
  • What difference would that make to how I am feeling?

Make a list of the things you are free to take action on. This will help you regain a sense of autonomy. Remember we create positive changes by taking small steps, even micro-steps.

There is always space for renewal and ‘re-setting.’ Discovering what you need in the moment will enable you to feel calmer and centred and take action.

I want to share a couple of suggestions of ways you can reset your life in a positive way, and thrive in challenging times.

1. Wake up well

How you start our day makes a difference to your mental state for the rest of the day. What would put you in a great mood and add zing to your day? It could be journaling, yoga, singing, dancing, running or walking in nature. Redesign a new morning routine to uplift you, whether you are a lark or an owl.  For more suggestions on creating a new morning routine, take a look at the book “Miracle Morning” by Hal Elrod.

2. Eat healthily

When we eat well we feel better. Autumn veg are fabulous at the moment. Try out some new recipes to get you inspired. This week’s favourite is oven baked celeriac chips.

3.  Re-balance your week

How much time do you take for yourself in your average week? Map out your ‘ideal’ week and compare it to your ‘actual’ week. This could be revealing! Think about what you want to change to create more space for you. Set an intention to take a small step towards it now.
