What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a treatment derived from ancient Chinese medicine. Fine needles are inserted at certain sites in the body stimulating the nervous system to release natural substances, such as pain-relieving endorphins.

Why bother?

Acupuncture can be used as a natural treatment for symptoms of menopause. Recent research in Denmark suggest that acupuncture could be a realistic option for women who can’t or do not wish to use hormone therapy to ease hot flushes, anxiety, and mood swings.

What do I need to know?

Traditional acupuncture is based on the belief that an energy, or “life force”, (know as Qi) flows through the body. Practitioners who use acupuncture believe that when Qi does not flow freely through the body, this can cause illness – they use acupuncture to re-establish a regular energy flow.

The bottom line

Acupuncture treatment is tailored to your individual need, and will be based on your individual medical and emotional history. Usually you’ll undergo a series of regular sessions, rather than a one off treatment.
